Ayat 21 of Surah Ar-Rum reads “and of His signs is that He has created spouses for you from your own kind you may find peace in them and He has set between you affection (mawaddah) and mercy. Surely, there are signs in this for those who reflect” . In this verse, which is related to the philosophy of marriage, God has preferred to use the word mawaddah rather than the other words with a similar meaning, which requires investigation. Examining the semantic evolution of the words used within the Holy Quran is an innovative and productive trend in Quranic studies. The words used in the Holy Book are often among the same words prevailing among the pre-Islamic Arabs and used in certain tribes and poetic circles. The word mawaddah like many other words, was influenced by the worldview after the revelation of the Quran, and underwent a semantic change in the verses of the Holy Book while preserving its semantic core. In order to discover the reason for this choice, the present paper examines the semantic evolution of the word mawaddah and critically analyzes Ayat 21 of sura Ar-Rum. It comes to the conclusion that none of the words with a similar meaning can be considered a better substitute for this word to convey the intended meaning.
